Admission to an elite school does not guarantee equal opportunities. An exceptional examination result lets Rin escape her planned future, but new prejudices await her at Sinegard. In Maková válka, R. F. Kuang connects a struggle for recognition with military institutions and shamanic power.
A provincial war orphan enters Nikan's most prestigious military academy. Classmates judge Rin by her background and appearance as she discovers a talent for shamanism. The school's hierarchy and older students' behavior reveal the close relationship between education, power, and vulnerability. Beyond the country's borders, another war remains a threat. The series opener expands Rin's personal struggles into questions about learning to control power and deciding whose interests it should serve.
