Author: Nikolaj Vasiljevič Gogol

Gogol's five-act comedy exposes corruption and fear among officials in a provincial town. News that an inspector is arriving incognito causes panic, and the officials mistake an insignificant young man for the inspector.
The town's leaders protect their positions through bribery, pretense, and hastily arranged measures. Gogol builds comedy from collective self-deception: the characters reveal their guilt through the intensity of their fear of inspection. The play satirizes power, bureaucracy, and a society that readily confuses an appearance of importance with real authority.
Corruption: The town administration operates through bribes and personal advantages.
Fear of inspection: Panic reveals more than the investigation itself.
Pretense: The characters try to conceal systemic failures behind a performance of respectability.
A provincial town in Tsarist Russia.
Khlestakov: A young man mistakenly taken for a government inspector.
The mayor: The town official trying to conceal local conditions.
For readers of classic drama, social satire, and absurd comedy.
One of the best-known satirical comedies in Russian dramatic literature.
