12,76 €
Radka Třeštíková's Osm is a psychological detective novel that begins almost at the end. Michaela is found with a gunshot wound, and when she wakes from a coma she cannot remember the fateful day or the entire preceding year. The police look for answers among those closest to her: her fiancé, a friend, and the family whose children she looked after. The novel gradually assembles the relationships, secrets, and decisions that led to the attempted murder.
The story works with its heroine's limited memory, presenting events in a different order from the one in which they occurred. After the attack, Michaela depends on other people's accounts and fragments of her own recollections. Seemingly ordinary relationships prove more complicated, and anyone close to her may know more than they admit.
The nonlinear narrative asks readers to compare new information with earlier impressions. Michaela's uncertain memory creates a gap filled by other people's testimony, making her relationships part of the investigation itself. The work also exists in audiobook form.
Memory loss: Michaela wakes unable to remember the last year of her life.
Investigation: The police and the heroine seek to discover who shot her and why.
Relationships and secrets: Those close to her conceal unspoken conflicts.
Psychological uncertainty: Incomplete memory changes how the heroine interprets her own past.
A contemporary Czech urban setting.
Michaela: A young woman who loses her memories of the preceding year after being shot.
For readers of psychological novels, Czech fiction, and detective stories built around secrets between people close to one another.
