Summer of Caprice
Author: Vladislav Vančura
8,00 €
The peace of a small town can be disturbed simply by someone new arriving. Mark Corner’s English translation of Rozmarné léto carries over Vančura’s play with elevated language and everyday conversation. The novella combines a summer atmosphere with affectionate comedy.
The supplied opening chapter lingers over images of weather, landscape, and rest. Rich imagery creates a distinctive rhythm. The book will appeal to readers of shorter classic fiction who value language as much as story.
The English translation of Vančura’s comic novella brings together a small town’s summer atmosphere and the play of poetic language.

What is Summer of Caprice about?
The premise is the quiet life of a small town into which a magician-acrobat arrives with his assistant. The encounter makes room for daydreams and minor human weaknesses.
The humor grows from the contrast between elevated speech and ordinary situations. The opening excerpt uses figurative descriptions and a slower pace. This edition includes illustrations by Jiří Grus.
