Kai divides his life between baseball and his young son. He dislikes accepting help, but the new nanny is his manager’s daughter, Miller, and her stay in Chicago is meant to be temporary. Liz Tomforde’s Polapená connects sports romance with parenting and the tension between a planned departure and growing intimacy.
About the book
A professional athlete and single father, Kai wants to care for his son his own way. Miller disrupts his expectations of home life. Since her father, Kai’s manager, hired her, the arrangement combines professional and family ties.
Miller has a career in baking but struggles with pressure and lost inspiration after a major award. A summer caring for a child introduces a different rhythm. Her need for freedom meets a household organized around a devoted father’s son.
Miller brings spontaneity while Kai represents stability and commitment. Both must consider what they expect from their time together when she is due to leave at summer’s end. A temporary arrangement becomes more than help with childcare. Sport provides an important setting, but domestic and romantic relationships form the story’s core.
