Návraty

What does it mean to return home when one's former family, community, and everyday world no longer exist? Návraty examines the postwar lives of Jewish inhabitants of East-Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe. Led by Kateřina Králová and Hana Kubátová, the authors focus on survivors for whom the end of the war did not mean a straightforward return to their previous lives.

The research uses more than a hundred testimonies in seventeen languages. It places personal stories within questions of rebuilding communities, transformed identities, and postwar conditions. This combination makes historical processes visible through specific people's experiences while allowing comparisons between regions. This Czech-language eBook is intended for readers interested in modern history, Jewish communities, and oral history. Its subject is the continuation of life after the catastrophe of the Holocaust and the difficulty of finding a place in the world again.

What is Návraty about?

The starting point is the question of return, both physical and psychological. People who survived persecution in camps, hiding, resistance movements, or under another identity entered a changed environment after the war. The book examines what these changes meant for their subsequent lives and relationships with their communities.

The collective work draws on a large multilingual body of interviews. Regional comparison complements the personal dimension of testimony; the stories cannot be reduced to a single shared experience. The editors bring together the work of young researchers from Charles University's Faculty of Social Sciences.
